The runway is situated on a cliff at an elevation of 2,845 meters (9,334 feet). On one end is a 600-meter drop into the valley, and on the other is a stone wall.

There is no chance for a “go-around” (aborted landing) upon approach; pilots must commit to the landing immediately. The airport serves as the main gateway for Mount Everest expeditions.

Geography
Access to the airport requires an extremely sharp 45-degree bank turn through a narrow valley just seconds before touchdown.
Adrenaline
Only a very small number of pilots worldwide (estimated to be around 20) are certified to land at this airport. The landing is essentially a manual visual maneuver resembling an obstacle course.
3. 🇵🇹 Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (Madeira), Portugal

The runway was originally too short. To extend it, architects built a long portion of the runway on over 180 pillars directly over the sea and beach.
Geography
The airport is famous for strong, unpredictable turbulence and crosswinds due to its proximity to the mountain and the ocean.
Adrenaline
Pilots must perform a sharp turn just before touchdown while battling severe gusting winds. Once landed, the runway is supported by a massive concrete viaduct.
4. 🇬🇮 Gibraltar International Airport

The Runway
The single runway intersects the city’s main road (Winston Churchill Avenue).
Geography
On one end of the runway is the Mediterranean Sea, and on the other is the Rock of Gibraltar.
Adrenaline
Whenever a plane lands or takes off, the road is closed to car traffic, much like a railway crossing. Car passengers must wait until the aircraft has passed.
5. 🇸🇽 Princess Juliana International Airport (St. Maarten), Caribbean

Landing aircraft fly over the heads of tourists, just a few meters above the airport fence.

The beach is a popular spot for “plane-spotting,” where tourists experience the blast of jet engines during takeoff, which is extremely dangerous yet highly popular.
