Skiing in the Sahara is a very unusual, but not entirely impossible, concept. While traditional skiing on snow is not a common activity in the desert, there are two main ways to experience this.

Snow Skiing in the Sahara (Extremely Rare)

Although it seems incredible, snow occasionally falls in some parts of the Sahara and its surrounding regions. These events are extremely rare but have been recorded in the Algerian town of Ain Sefra, located near the Atlas Mountains.

  • Desert Snowfall: Snow in the Sahara is an exceptional phenomenon that has occurred only a few times in recent decades. It’s always a short-lived event, as the snow melts quickly on the sand. Such conditions for skiing are unpredictable and last only for a few hours.
  • Atlas Mountains: In Morocco, which borders the Sahara, the Atlas Mountains have several ski resorts, such as Oukaïmeden. During the winter months (December to March), snow falls here, allowing for high-altitude skiing, just a short distance from the desert.

Sandboarding

Sandboarding is a much more realistic and popular alternative. This sport is similar to snowboarding, but instead of snow, you ride down sand dunes.

  • How it works: You ride on special boards that are designed to glide on sand. Just like with skiing, you can enjoy a thrilling ride down steep dunes.
  • Where to try it: Sandboarding is a popular activity in many desert areas, including Morocco (for example, the Erg Chebbi dunes) and Egypt. It offers a unique “skiing” experience in an exotic environment.
